How do you winterize an outboard motor?
I have recently inherited an older boat with an outboard motor. What do I need to do for the winter??
I will assume freshwater, if salt water, add an engine flush to drain the gas out of the carb and flush the cooling system.
Add some gasoline stabilizer to the gas tank before the last ride of the year. I like SeaFoam, I run it year round in all my boats.
Run the engine out of gas by pulling the fuel line. Do this before you pull it out of the water.
Once out of the water, drop the engine and let all the water run out.
Drain the lower unit grease, and refill with gear lube. Make sure to check that your plugs have the little teflon gaskets on them before you return them to the lower unit. Tip: put the screw in the top hole first before you pull out the tube of lube, this will keep the lube from all draining out before you return the lower screw to position.
Remove the spark plugs and fog the cylinders. Turn the engine over once or twice to distribute the fogging oil.
Disconnect the battery and give it a full charge.
