How To Become a Chaplain
I accepted a new job one time, located in a distant town. My wife had to remain behind to get our home ready for sale, while I forged on to find a rental in a new town, 120 miles away. I was given the name of a landlord to speak with. As soon as I met with the landlord, I noticed something unique about her. I felt compelled to ask her if she was a clergy-member. As it happened, she was an ordained minister who held services every Sunday for the campers who visited the campground she owned. Meeting her became my first experience in the arena of chaplaincy.
Perhaps you have experienced something like that yourself. You may have sensed something unusual about someone. You perhaps could not put your finger on it. Something inside of you, your spirit, already knew the answer. You recognize their divinity.
The guidelines for chaplaincy continues to grow and evolve. It has always been a creative answer to ever-changing circumstances. Individuals are anything but static. Folks go through their days doing what they need to survive. Folks may move, travel, go to school, get married, get sick, get better – they live. A career choice might restrict a person's ability to worship with a community on a consistent basis. This is where chaplains can fill a void. A few types of places where chaplains may be in service:
Ski or holiday resorts.
Businesses.
Retirement communities.
Airports.
Cruise ships.
Shopping malls.
Most chaplains, at least in the U.S., have come from the Christian faith. In the armed forces, there was, until of the late 20th century, only three recognized faith groups from which chaplains came: Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Jew. Unitarian chaplains slipped through under the Protestant label. The armed forces have since widened their rules to include Wiccans and Muslims as well. This trend has been also being seen happening in hospitals and hospice centers as well.
Having ministers, serving as chaplains, making themselves available to businesses and/or schools has been another growing trend. School shootings as well as other crises have opened up these possibilities. One time, I went on a visit to Baltimore with a mission team to look at the way to create new churches. The police dept. gifted us a bus tour of Baltimore, as a portion of the program. Driving by one of their schools, we had been told the Baltimore school district was requesting assistance from ministers or clergy to assist on the campuses, serving as chaplains. The mere presence along with counsel from chaplains greatly reduced the levels of violence inside schools.
The world is changing. Modernism has been replaced by a group named "post-modernism." Communities have become more integrated, both culturally and religiously. Growing up, I noticed that individuals congregated based on commonalities. Far more frequently than not, a single religion dominated. Fiften years ago, my community was 80% Catholic, 10% Episcopalian or the rest were a mix of Protestant, Jew and no claimed religion. At last check, the area has been roughly half Catholic and of the other 93 consist of Protestant, Jewish, Unitarian, Christian Science, Mormon, Jehovah's Witness or a host of New Age groups.
The chaplain has been facing a greater variety of individuals together with differing spiritual paths. Today's chaplain must possess a lot of religious or spiritual tolerance. And the chaplain has to be far more knowledgeable of additional religions as well. A single tool the chaplain can have belonging to his or her arsenal has been completion from the Master of Comparative Religion course as a result of of the ULC Seminary. Knowing in which other people become coming from has been essential in the event you want to converse competently with them and minister to them. Authors Naomi Paget and Janet McCormack have this to say about it:
The need is great.
Everywhere in the planet, individuals become hurting. You find people who have been sick or dying in hospitals needing comfort. You will find individuals, living in communities, who work non-standard shifts and miss sharing fellowship together with others of the same faith. Professionals such as police and firefighters need someone from time to time, to pray with and to seek help in understanding whenever evil rears its ugly head.
A chaplain can help come to those who are hurting. A chaplain is there for individuals who're religiously unattached, but still have a need for help. For those who have been lonely or afraid, a simple blessing, kind word or caring touch does more than you can think.
A chaplain keeps the sacred by helping others. As The universe has given existence, we go and take care of that life. God – The Universe – All that is Divine, honors and welcomes a ministry of the heart. It truly is ‘Divine Glory' defined. Ariel is a strong willed, self motivated girl. She loves her family, but at the same time, she is yearning to be herself. She is a lead role and the rebellious daughter of Rev. Moore.
Rusty is a girl dedicated to Willard, her man. She's very caring, but very witty, and is not afraid to speak her mind. She may talk a mile a minute, but most of it IS valid.
Ren McCormack — A teenager from Chicago who loves to dance. He is the new guy which intrigues Ariel. He helps to get a dance approved in this small town, even though Rev. Moore and his congregation are against it. This is the male lead role and requires a strong dancer.
Rev. Shaw Moore — The powerful and very traditional local minister who due to the loss of his son, he has led a campaign of no dancing and burning of non-approved books. He is a lead role for an adult.
Chuck Cranston — The local bad boy and Ariel's boyfriend. He is more accepted by Rev. Moore since he is a local boy. Ariel dumps him for Ren, the new, more exciting new boy in town.
Ethel McCormack — Ren's mother. Considered a supporting role, she tends to not stand up for Ren, but let's the view of the town stay intact.
Vi Moore — Reverand Shaw's wife. She has a quiet way about her and she is supportive of letting the kids have more freedom, but yet is also supportive of her husband. This is a supporting role.
Willlard Hewitt — The kind country yokel who can’t dance and is befriended by Ren. This is a supporting role and requires an about face with not being able to dance, but learns to dance in the process of the production.
Urleen and Wendy Jo — Ariel's friends. Cameo roles, most likely unspoken in a stage production. In the movie, they are in the car that Ariel is straddling with the truck of her bad boy, boyfriend.
